Messages in the Night
Read Job 31:1 through 33:33
“For God does speak—now one way, now another—though no one perceives it. In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on people as they slumber in their beds” (Job 33:14–15).
Elihu’s discourse on dreams and visions of the night offers a discerning view of God and His methods. God can interact with humanity through any means, but sometimes He chooses dreams and visions. It might be that when we are sleeping, our minds are more receptive to messages or warnings from God.
This may have been the case with the prophetic dream Pharaoh received about a seven-year famine. In a similar example, God warned Joseph in a dream about Herod’s plans to kill Jesus in Bethlehem. These helpful messages in the night are commonplace in the Bible.
Even so, most dreams are triggered by something we read, watched on television, or a spicy pizza we ate the night before. Some, however, are God sent and inspired. For those, we should prayerfully consider the message, revelation, or warning they contain.
Prayer Suggestion: Lord, give me a discerning heart, so I may always hear and recognize Your voice.
